Anchorwomen Host Johnson &
Whales In Softball Exhibition Game
As a Rhode Island College softball alumni who has been following the team for a number of years now, Thursday nights game is one that will tell us a lot about their upcoming season. Failing to make playoffs the last few seasons and with a question as to who the head coach will be for the upcoming Spring it'll be interesting to see what the Rhode Island College squad is looking like this season. After loosing just one senior last spring, pitcher Kate McCaughey, the Anchorwomen are made up of four dominating seniors, six sophomores, and a large handful of sophomore and freshmen prospects that have the potential to bring this team to the next level that they need. The Anchorwomen conclude their 2015 run with and unfortunate record of 12 wins and 20 losses while the JWU wildcats ended on a 33-12 record.
The Rhode Island College versus Johnson and Whales University preseason game will take place at the Dana Bazar softball complex on the Rhode Island College campus at 6pm sharp. The two teams will battle it out for 7 innings as the Anchorwomen search for revenge on their two substantial loses on the Wildcats last season.

Game Day Recap!
At the opening of the Rhode Island College versus Johnson and Whales preseason softball game RIC pitcher Lauren DiScuillo took the mound taking the start of the game with sophomore Emma Simmons as her primary backstop. DiScuillo started off the inning allowing just one runner on with an error on center field Jess Cerce. Cerce redeemed herself when the following batter put another shot out to center field, making the play and stealing the double away from cleanup hitter Emily Gorecki. Gorecki took the mound for the Wildcats striking out leadoff hitter Kelsey Burgess and shutting down the top of the lineup.
For the first two innings of play both Gorecki and DiScuillo allowed no more than four batters up for the inning. RIC Anchorwomen started the scoreboard up in the third as the top of the lineup took their second face-off to Gorecki. Junior shortstop Nicole Venturini got things moving with a two-out triple to deep left field with Senior Mary Sweeney following up with another deep triple allowing Venturini to walk herself in for the first run of the night. RIC did some more damage in the 4th, scoring DiScuillo, Erica Fleming, and Kelsey Wood walking in one run and allowing two more runs in off of an outfield single from Venturini.
The Wildcats came out in the 6th fighting to get some runs back and managing to push through three runs bringing the lead down to just one run. The Anchorwomen new that JWU had found dusted out the cobwebs and realized it was time to step it up, and that's just what they did. For the third time in the contest, the inning started at the top of the order with sophomore Michaela DeAnglis starting things off but coming up short on a ground out in the infield. Sarah Nolan was the first to reach first in the inning on a walk eventually allowing her to score on Sweeney's second triple of the night. Sweeney was then pushed in on a base hit to the right side from Junior Chelsea Schott. The bottom of the order Wood and Simmons were also able to cross the plate in the inning on a number of walks from JWU ace pitcher bringing the gap up to a 9-3 game. For the remainder of the game both JWU and RIC pitchers shut down batters in one, two, three fashion closing out the night with a 9-3 victory for the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen with a promising look to the future of their spring season.

First Day on the Job Thoughts
As my first time reporting a live game I found myself watching the game in an entirely different way. Honestly, I didn't really enjoy it as much. I was too busy trying to write down important instances that were happening during the game like trying to remember who was up to bat and moved runner A to third and then which batter actually batted her in. Softball isn't the fastest game in the world, so I tip my hat to those who are reporting hockey games. The game would be over, and I'd likely still be writing down the first momentous play of the night. Personally, I like to go to the games and pay attention to what is happening but not necessarily have to remember every detail. As a player, I always remembered details about my opponents such as which batter to throw outside or which batter chases the rise, those things I could remember. But as an outsider who isn't in the action, forget it. I think half the problem would be that I'm not very familiar with many of the players on the team so that just made things that much harder to keep track of.
As far as getting my report done on time I definitely cut it close. With a 6 pm start and a game that would typically go only seven innings that went to 8 I didn't get home until about 9:30 pm. Luckily I had started to write about the competing teams beforehand and had already included directions and rosters to my page so that once the game was completed, I just had to add my game recap, and of course, this segment. If I had not done that ahead of time, there would have been no way for me get this up on time. I also saved time by asked to take a picture of the official scorebook for the game. Since RIC is only a DIII school and the game is only an exhibition game and official score likely won't be posted on their website. Having the scorebook in front of me while writing my report made things much easier and allowed me to elaborate on my notes and double check my facts. All in all, I don't think I would make the best sports reporter, but I can definitely appreciate what they do.
